Old-fashioned romance meets easy listening on Mark Millar’s latest.
Mark Millar – The Great Adventure
Pop music has always been skewed towards youth, and perhaps always will. It’s the musical language of young love and excitement, and maybe it’s easy for older artists to fade into the background, but let’s not underrate what they have to say – love alongside age and long-term commitment is just as, if not more meaningful. And this is ‘The Great Adventure’ that Mark Millar endorses in his latest release, not some world-travelling escapade, but an adventure of the more spiritual kind.
Mark Millar is no new addition to music, having done years of roaming the country with several bands, and studio work. But it was only in 2019 that he finally focused on his own song ideas, turning hundreds of fragments into fully-formed songs and his debut album, which was soon followed by another.
‘The Great Adventure’ is an accessible, upbeat, guitar-led track with a heartwarming tribute to a long-term partner – a real-life one, it seems, as Millar wrote this track for his wife’s birthday.
His simple yet heartfelt lyrics note the concerns of getting older – ‘You say you wish it wasn’t so…you say your lines are there for all to see…’ – but insist that the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks, saying ‘There’s so much there’s good about it…the sparkle in your eyes that’s what matters to me’, all delivered in his mellow vocals.
With its jaunty, jangling guitars and upbeat drums, the track is an easy ride, with some sweet backing vocals and echoing, delayed electric guitar lines adding a little atmosphere. It’s reminiscent of the happier sides of 1970s and 1980s songwriters like Sheryl Crow and REM. And at just under 3 minutes, it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Anyone looking for a more mature perspective on life and a little dose of optimism can find it here.
