I saw Green Dawn‘s 2024 EP, You, Me, and Us through a YouTube music video but after looking at her Spotify, her debut was a 2023 EP. Since it hasn’t been that long, I decided to start with 잠 못 드는 밤. Green Dawn is classified as an indie and R&B artist and that’s accurate.
“유애” is a radio-friendly indie pop song that follows the usual pop arrangements with strong, but light melodies. Honestly, it comes and goes quickly without a lot of staying power. “잠 못 드는 밤” moves towards R&B mixed with indie pop. This is an improved introduction because Green Dawn presents a wider vocal and style range. Instrumentals are minimal, making it easy to get drawn in.
Green Dawn goes back to the past on “허상.” It sounds like a track that spins 80s, 90s, and early 2000s elements. And it was stuck in my mind, but Green Dawn reminds me of OOHYO’s vocals too. It’s not overt, but in some verses, I can hear a similar vocal tone.
There’s another slower song after “허상” with “발자국.” Green Dawn leans back towards radio pop again but adds more jazz elements in the instrumental. It’s still missing some weight but it’s a nice easygoing track. I wonder if Green Dawn isn’t sure which direction to go and is following along with influences too closely.
잠 못 드는 밤’s final song is “You sing.” It rounds out the EP but I think this is the most engaging song. It’s only vocals and acoustic guitar but you finally get a clear and open presence from Green Dawn. I think going towards this direction in style might be the best option so now I’ll have to listen to the latest EP and listen to her progression.
