Short Stuff 30 : Sun Kim, ZZINI, RecordTheVoiceMessage, Your Crush, Luya, MEMI, VEIRDOS, haer

Sun Kim : Space Station

Going by his bio, Sun Kim is a veteran of jazz and Neo-seoul in South Korea. “Space Station” backs up this claim. A great song all around.

ZZINI: PINKLOVE

PINKLOVE has two songs, “koiyoi” and “Pinklove.” ZZINI is entrenched in indie pop and indie rock, swaying between the two genres freely. “Pinklove” sounds like a track from The Black Skirts and Electriceels which is the best compliment I can think of.

RecordTheVoiceMessage : Orange summer breeze

RecordTheVoiceMessage captured a classic indie rock sound that’s disappeared in Korean music. It’s perfectly calm and mellow while presenting dynamic ideas throughout the entire track without sudden shifts. It’s amazing.

Your Crush : Drowning

Your Crush is my window into the Korean diaspora. They have solidified their style and continue to polish and impress with each song. “Drowning” has a mix between a nostalgic flashback OST track or a mellow time-lapse drama teaser. Both are good.

Luya : Catch the Rain

“Catch the Rain” is a perfectly standard commercial pop track. And somehow I think Luya is compromising on this song to release something else. Watching some of her covers and other songs, I don’t think she knows what style she wants to fully commit to.

MEMI : I’m broken

MEMI is on a journey and she has a lot of support to walk this path. With her music, it does feel like she’s getting to create, compose, and release all her ideas with varying levels of success. “I’m broken” fits within her discography but it’s kind of like Buckethead‘s music path too.

VERIDOS : Pretty Knife

VERIDOS is a mix between punk and rock with a harder lean towards alternative rock. They’ve found their sound, I think they need to release more music to get a better sense of what they’re going to be.

haer : frustrated

I thought Why It Ruled was lacking. Watching haer‘s streaming and sns rise was interesting, but it felt like something was lost feeding these two machines. “Frustrated” doesn’t move far from her audio comfort zone but it does sound like there’s a deliberate direction now.
