Brinicle Rain : Gamma

Described as a “metalcore/djent” band, Brinicle Rain plays a style that’s slowly become more difficult to find. Under the umbrella of punk, hardcore, and metal, there aren’t that many active bands and established groups have gone relatively quiet. Gamma is a welcome addition to the stagnant discography.

Nine songs and 35 minutes of music is a good chunk of music. And Brinicle Rain is another example of a band that comes and goes. Their first self-titled EP was released in 2019. Then a single in 2021. And finally this full length three years later. So while Gamma is welcome, it’s more disappointing it took the band so long to get to this point.

As for the music, Brinicle Rain harnesses the metalcore genre perfectly. The crunchy guitars mixed with a bass and technical drum performance are excellent. And while the more aggressive songs work, the more melodic tracks like “Haven” is where I think Brinicle Rain can show some uniqueness.

But with metalcore, there’s always the threat of repetition and Brinicle Rain is at the edge of that line on occasion. I like “Polyhedon” and its bass breakdown midway into the song. Adding that track to the full length was a great decision. Every song on Gamma has a similar introduction and sometimes I wish the band would get right into the verse because that shows the biggest difference between tracks.

“Abyss” is a perfect example of this. Post-introduction, there’s a lot to get pulled into. And ending with “Sign of Saturn” is a classic move. Well done.
