Stickermon Adventure : The Fiercest Summertime

Stickermon Adventure sounds like a combination of its influences. The band brings pieces of Japanese indie rock, Adios Audio, piano-fused indie pop, and light post rock together in a debut EP. It’s an honest showing of a group of musicians that aren’t working to impress an audience, but make music they want.

“homebabyhome” is the most “modern” Korean indie rock song. It’s a quick tempo track that doesn’t require a lot of finesse and moves swiftly, mainly because of the vocals. 정오‘s vocals sound free of strain and any attempt to copy another artist. Honestly, “homebabyhome” sounds like a song you’d heard from a Korean band in the mid-2010s or a Japanese indie band from 2005-2008.

I don’t know if Stickermon Adventure is directly influenced by Adios Audio because “Youth love letter” sounds like it could have come directly from them. It’s not a copy, but like a close homage that captures the same energy. Using keyboards as an active participant is always great and Stickermon Adventure lift it well.

If there’s an uneven track, it’s “Fighting Propose.” Somehow Stickermon Adventure made a pop rock track that sounds like it came from an era before the group was born. It sounds nostalgic and I wonder how the song was composed. “Ice Age” is the most mature of all five songs along with giving the band time to show off a different side of themselves. It adds a little bit of jazz inside the indie foundations. You can also hear some more raw composition elements that aren’t heard on other tracks.

According to the liner notes, “Look Back” is influenced by Fujimoto Tatsuki‘s short story of the same name. With a movie of the short on the way, it’ll be interesting if Stickermon Adventure’s “Look Back” could fit as a soundtrack song. As a reader of the short story, I can actually imagine “Look Back” working as a trailer OST song. I’m not sure where in the story it would fit though.

The Fiercest Summertime is impressive. It has a familiar but different soundscape from a lot of other current bands. It also has a different tone from 정오’s other band CHUNGYOILE. Stickermon Adventure has the tone and energy that Korean music needs right now and I hope they continue on.
