After spending more time listening to Childlike Future, kkumbugchew’s keepsake box electronica album, I feel like the duo harnessed a sound that’s so specific but broad that it can surpass borders. What might keep it from getting more popularity is that people won’t know what kind of mood they need to be in for the album.
The 11 songs are calming, mellow, and crafted in ways that keep your attention. “Our Vacation,” with the upbeat electronic pop, immediately welcomes you. “The Taste of How We Speak” has a slight KIRARA feel without living in that more frenetic universe.
Childlike Future also sounds like a soundtrack to an 8 or 16-bit game. Some of the melodies, like on “Dear Brother,” present some chiptune elements, and each song plays into the overarching narrative. Depending on the song, you get excellent background tracks or attention-demanding experiences. How you experience the balance is up to you.
And as a style described as keepsake box electronica, I feel like kkumbugchew is allowing a wide area to experiment in. If there’s a new release, like an EP, I feel like they can focus on delivering another part of the style. Each release will be a part of the conversation that kkumbugchew is having with listeners. Not knowing where the next release is exciting.
Electronic fans know the variety of styles. kkumbugchew is using multiple style ideas to create their music. And I wonder how deep this world will go.
