Albums We Didn’t Review 3 : Pika, 12BH, meeroo choi, verycoybunny, Ryang-Yu, Ohelen&Choisol, KAIAVANT

Pika : Rip Van Winkle

Pika, also a member of Loro’s, was an infrequent solo artist with only one 2010 EP. This surprise return shows that time has changed some aspects of the music but the core stays the same.

Genre: electronic, alternative

12BH : SInk!

I found out about 12BH through Greeny, but the EP is excellent indie pop rock or as the four-piece calls it – “yacht rock.” It’s fun mellow music that’s been busy the past couple of years.

Genre: yacht rock, indie rock

meeroo choi : nEwCHAt

I guess that meeroo choi was part of KIRARA‘s Sangsangmadang Academy, something I found out after I got the email from meeroo about this first EP. nEwCHAt is more polished than a lot of debut EPs and ideas sound a lot more fleshed out. At the same time, I feel like there’s something bubbling under the surface and meeroo choi could venture in a totally new direction on a case-by-case basis.

Genre: folk, indie pop, meandering electronic

verycoybunny : NOW OR NEVER

verycoybunny is another artist in that group of musicians who should be more popular but haven’t gotten that critical mass. Her style of rock, pop rock, and pop is both new and nostalgic. She’s found her position and voice and I think it’s more the bullshit of Korean and Western media that hasn’t allowed her to be more well known.

Genre: rock, pop

Ryang-Yu : Witness The Dream

Witness The Dream is interesting because Ryang-Yu is basically flexing her abilities. The five songs move through individual genres and she proves that she can control and deliver every time. It makes it difficult to know where Ryang-Yu will focus.

Genre: pop, jazz, R&B, folk

Ohelen&Choisol : Pause

Ohelen&Choisol are probably defunct after two years of activity. That said, 2020-21 presented a lot of interesting music and Pause was a great EP. It’s going to eventually be a lost release, but I think that more people need to listen to it.

Genre: indie, rock, experimental

KAIAVANT : Spring

KAIAVANT‘s Spring is a continuation of her pop-adjacent style. An unfortunate side effect is that “spring breeze” has some BIBI “Bam Yang Gang” moments and the track is early in the full length. But she definitely makes a bigger impact across the entire album.

Genre: pop, R&B, soul
