molar system : system malfunction

I’ve been listening to each of molar system‘s releases. They’ve shown an interesting progression of style. The band is based around electronic and alternative rock with a bit of indie rock scattered in melodies. But there aren’t any hard limitations on how the molar system composes their music.

system malfunction is a six-song EP with an inclusion of the debut single, “GREENROOM<3” and their June 2025 single, “Fear of Flying.” The song that starts system malfunction is “GREENROOM<3” and a reminder of molar system’s debut.

molar system state that “MESS” is “inspired by Russian post-punk,” but it feels more like a mix of break beats and alternative rock. Similar to “don’t wash me off your jeans,” the melody drags you into the center of the song. The mix is interesting because between sannie‘s low key and melodic vocals and the somewhat muted instrumentals, it sounds like a weird dream. I kind of want a wider soundscape with more deliberate highs and lows here.

I’ve said it before, I’m not a fan of intro tracks or interludes that much. If it fits the narrative, I think it’s generally ok if you’re listening to a release from start to finish. But an intro or interlude should also be a standalone song. “L = 1/2ρV2SCL” comes before “Fear of Flying” and follows the song’s style. The composition is good and I appreciate the ideas around it, but it’s something I listen to once.

“Fear of Flying” could have been combined with “L = 1/2ρV2SCL” to create a longer overall song. This is easily one of the strongest songs. It has a dynamic range and pulses with a lot of power in the composition and arrangement. It demands your attention.

When I heard “P.32,” I thought it was something that could have been written for BIBI. Like how the band describes it, “P.32” is a psychedelic-forward song that also mixes some strong R&B elements inside the electronic verses. And ending system malfunction is “don’t wash me off your jeans. The song is a mellow indie rock song with a tempo and tone that slowly pull you in with a welcoming and warm goodbye.

With the way the EP is ordered, the mellow and minimal start grows into a stronger and confident conclusion. And I think the order has a precise narrative. molar system uses genres and styles freely while also creating a signature sound. system malfunction is a great extended release that shows off the band’s potential. But I do think the band hasn’t fully opened their potential yet.
