GREENY : New Matt

New Matt is a ride through psychedelic electronica, bedroom pop, and indie-rock. With just four tracks, New Matt manages to build a rich and dynamic soundscape of various sounds. Not only do GREENY’s soft vocals shine in the EP, the instrumental sees bold experimentation between dreamlike psychedelic rock and rhythmic acid house which comes together nicely in the passionate project that is New Matt.

The first track, “Ecc 3.6” is an exciting work of psychedelic acid-house. As GREENY plays around with synth sliders and the techno-heavy bassline, we get a full minute of a rather subtle but certainly enjoyable piece of electronic experimentation.

“If I could” switches it up with some melodic electric guitars, layered instrumentation with a repetitive vocal hook “If I could ever be you,” expressing the desperation to understand the other.

While “Her” carries on with the guitars, this time more hard-hitting and in a more industrial/ gritty tone overall. The track encapsulates the frustrating feeling of unreciprocated love well, with the minor chords and sultry delivery accurately depicting a state of exhaustion — especially the chilling isolated vocal segment at the end, longing for a response that never seems to get answered.

The title track, “Momo” features a nostalgic blend of bedroom-pop and electronica. The track paints the feeling of self-growth in a way that is somewhat comforting in GREENY’s mellow delivery. With simple lyrics, GREENY soothes our fears of having to mature as we grow, yet also heals our inner child with the jumpy electric guitars and synths. I particularly like the lyric,

Let them call me lost and small
I was never theirs at all

New Matt is impressive in that it has lots to showcase with so little. As GREENY has shown us her versatility as an artist, New Matt is GREENY’s entry into electronic music, which is yet another addition to her ever-growing discography of soundscapes.
