When I first heard “Fake Fail” from DONGYOUNG‘s EP, I thought it was simple and direct indie rock. Like, DONGYOUNG creates music that’s simply enjoyable without tons of extra or overloaded composition. Quiet Noisy Music is almost like a lie, the EP is to the point and values your time.
The EP uses a rock foundation while adding indie, pop rock, and even some funk. “Envy” is a great opener that highlights DONGYOUNG’s ability as a composer and arranger. The smooth melodies flow and you can really enjoy the soundscape.
“Time Distortion” starts like a Life and Time song before moving into a funk rock vocal line. DONGYOUNG has a firm grip on how to use melodies in the vocals and instrumentations so they’re all flowing together. As a listener, he isn’t asking much except to enjoy what you’re hearing.
“Fake Fail” follows the first two songs. It’s “Opportunity Adverscity” that changes Quiet Noisy Music’s tone. It’s got a slower tempo and a heavier melody. But the song still relies on strong melodies even with the more “emotional” tone. The small style change keeps the EP interesting.
Quiet Noisy Music’s final song is similar to “Opportunity Adverscity.” It’s like DONGYOUNG is comfortable stylistically on the first three songs and uses the last two to explore and test his composition skills. It’s a nice balance and keeps things fresh.
Quiet Noisy Music is DONGYOUNG’s EP after two singles released in 2022 and 2023. It’s a fresh and simple presentation with good ideas. DONGYOUNG has created a signature here and I think exploring both directions could result in a great full length.
